Melody is king

Doug Ritchie's musical style is a bit of a throwback to the 70's when melody was king and honest storytelling could be heard on airwaves and turntables everywhere. For the past few years, Doug has been busy writing and recording new songs for his debut album.

Early sparks of musical inspiration can be attributed to an eclectic array such as Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush, and the Cars. Doug took this kindling and after witnessing and being struck by the energy at the Blueberry Bluegrass festival, invested everything into learning the 5 string banjo. Soon he was singing and playing in the Riverdale Bluegrass Band. The band ended up recording, playing bluegrass festivals, civic events and major functions for several years following. Involvement in the Edmonton local bluegrass scene led him to a nine year radio DJ gig as Prairie Pickin's co-host on CJSR FM 88.5.

After the Riverdale Bluegrass Band had their run, Doug put the banjo down and started writing songs on guitar and piano. Being enamored by the sheer artistry of local musicians such as Andrea House and Bob Jahrig, a mission to unlock and create beautiful and memorable songs was born.

The product of all this passion for music can be heard in Doug's new album "Clear Water". On it you'll find eight originals and two covers ("A Thousand Lovers" by Lynn Miles and "Planes" by Elton John & Bernie Taupin). The title track "Clear Water" was the last song to be written and recorded and was prompted by a friend to "write a song and post it on Facebook". The song was then etched out and a rough acoustic version posted. The song's melody and subject matter resonated with people as it captures some of the feelings we are collectively experiencing during the COVID 19 pandemic.

The entire album is presented and delivered in a heartfelt manner and tasteful accompaniment ties everything together in a big bow.
